In
1996 the push for increased awareness of the environment around the school was
headed by a group of four Mater Christi students, Emma Spencer, Sujanie
Fernando, Shell Peters and Natasha Maugueret. This group put forward a proposal
to the college leaders and homerooms for the purpose of determining the feasibility
and the general level of interest in the creation of an Environment Group within
the college community. Mostly positive feedback was received and a second
proposal was put forward to determine the composition and structure of the
group. The Environment Group had many difficulties in its original creation, it
was a process of trial and error to find the best structure. In the end it was
found that the best way was to copy the example set by the SRC and create a
formal structure for the group, which included representatives from each
homeroom and regular meetings.
1997 saw the creation of a new college captaincy, the Environment Captain. Applicants wrote a letter to Sister Maureen Keating, and a very capable student was selected to create history within the college community. Belinda Cuce was selected to be the first of our many Environment Captains. During that year many activities were organized to promote the environment, such as participating in Green Up, Clean Up day, Keep Australia Beautiful week and Arbor week. We still carry on these proud tradition till this very day.
We have come along way since our humble start way back in 1996, and we have many people to thank and congratulate for their efforts. We, the Mater Christi Environment group would like to thank in particular Sister Maureen Keating and Emma Spencer. Thanks goes to Sister Maureen Keating for being the head of the Environment Group, without all her dedication and lots of work the Environment group would not be able to do the good it does currently. Also we would like that once again thank Emma Spencer who was the driving force that helped create the Environment Group and without her hard work and determination none of this would have been possible. And of course, we would like to thank everyone in the college community who has participated, either by being a homeroom representative or was a willing helpers through out the life time of the group.
